Midjourney free and from Russia: is there a free plan, how to pay and what to use instead

This article is not about writing prompts and pressing buttons: how to actually use the tool is covered in a separate guide. This one is about money and access. Three questions people ask search engines most often: what it costs, whether you can use it free, and whether it works from Russia. Status as of September 2026.

There is no free plan. None at all

Let us start with the important part, because an entire industry of misinformation is built on top of it. Midjourney has no free plan and no trial period. To generate even a single image you need a subscription, starting at 10 dollars a month.

It was not always this way. Until the spring of 2023 new users got roughly two dozen free generations to try things out. At the end of March 2023 the company switched that off: founder David Holz blamed extraordinary demand and throwaway accounts. That was the same period when fake images of Trump being arrested and the Pope in a puffer jacket went viral. The trial was briefly restored later, but it did not last, and it has not worked since.

That is where the widely repeated figure of 25 free generations comes from. It was true three years ago. Today it is stale text that gets copied from one traffic-hungry article to the next.

If a site promises you Midjourney for free, it has either recycled a 2023 article, or it is reselling someone else's account, or it is not Midjourney at all.

Downloading Midjourney: there is nothing to download

People search for a Midjourney download hundreds of times a month, and there is no correct answer to that request. Midjourney is a cloud service. Generation happens on the company's servers, and you work through a browser or through a bot in a messenger. There is no official application for Windows or macOS, and there never was one.

This is where it gets ugly. Demand exists, the product does not, so scammers moved in. The loudest case: a fake Midjourney page on social media gathered over a million followers advertising a non-existent desktop version. The supposed installer was an infostealer that pulled passwords and card details out of the browser. The scheme is still running, only the branding changes.

• Any exe or dmg named Midjourney is malware. There is no other option, because no genuine file exists.
• Cracked versions, free premium builds, activators are the same thing wearing a different hat.
• Lookalike sites with similar addresses exist to harvest card details: you enter the card, the money leaves, no subscription appears.
• There is exactly one official site: midjourney.com. Everything else is resale at best and theft at worst.

Does the service open from Russia

Midjourney is not blocked from the Russian side. Restrictions come from the other direction: the service is unfriendly to Russian addresses, and users report the web version failing to load or accounts getting limited. From what people describe, signing up and logging in is more reliable from a foreign address.

Discord is a separate complication. Historically Midjourney lived there: you typed a command to a bot in a chat and the bot sent images back. Discord is blocked in Russia, so that route is closed for many people. The good news is that Midjourney now has a full web version on the official site, and Discord is no longer required for generation. The bad news is that this barely changes anything, because the real obstacle is not the interface but the payment.

What the subscription costs

There are four plans, and they differ mainly in how much fast generation time you get per month. Monthly billing:

• Basic, 10 dollars a month. About 3.3 hours of fast generation. Roughly two hundred images if you count crudely, since one image eats about a minute.
• Standard, 30 dollars. Around 15 hours of fast generation plus unlimited slow mode. The working choice for anyone generating regularly.
• Pro, 60 dollars. About 30 hours plus stealth mode, where your images stay out of the public feed.
• Mega, 120 dollars. About 60 hours, for people generating at volume.

Annual billing takes roughly a fifth off each plan. The detail people learn too late: the cheapest plan has no unlimited slow mode. Run out of hours and generation stops until next month or until you buy more. So if you intend to work rather than experiment, look at Standard from the start, where unlimited slow mode covers everything that is not urgent.

One more thing: time is spent on every attempt, failures included. A bad frame costs exactly as much as a good one.

Payment: a Russian card will not go through

You cannot pay Midjourney directly with a card from a Russian bank. The charge is declined, and a VPN does not help: you can change the network, but not the bank that issued the card. There are three workarounds, and they are the same for every foreign AI service.

1. A foreign or virtual card issued abroad. The lowest final cost per image, since you pay exactly the list price. In exchange you deal with issuing and topping up the card, plus a VPN to log in.
2. An intermediary who buys the subscription on your behalf for rubles. The markup is usually noticeable, but there is no card and no setup. The risk is handing account access to a third party.

There is no Russian interface

People often search for Midjourney in Russian, and the answer has two halves. The interface exists in English only. Anything presented as a Russian Midjourney is either your browser auto-translating the page or a Russian aggregator that wrapped the service in its own shell.

Prompts are the more interesting half. The model does understand Russian text and will return an image. But it was trained largely on English descriptions, so the specialised vocabulary of light, optics and style lands far more precisely in English: cinematic lighting, shallow depth of field, golden hour give predictable results, while their Russian equivalents are a lottery. A simple working habit: think in your own language, write in English, and pick the camera and lighting terms by hand instead of trusting a translator.

What to use instead if you do not want to pay

Good news: over the three years Midjourney has been paid-only, the quality gap has narrowed a lot. Free tools today produce images that only a paid service could deliver a year ago. Worth trying:

• Russian models such as Kandinsky and Shedevrum. They open without a VPN, genuinely understand Russian and cost nothing. They do not match Midjourney artistically, but they are enough for social media and illustration.
• Leonardo gives a daily free allowance, plenty of style control and a plain web interface with no messenger involved.
• Ideogram is the first choice whenever the image needs readable text: logos, covers, posters.
• Image generators built into chat assistants. You get a quick look-and-see image right inside the conversation, no separate signup.

An honest caveat: nothing free replaces Midjourney entirely. Its strength is not technical precision but taste, and frames come out beautiful even from a short, careless prompt. Free models more often demand that you explain exactly what you want. If the task is make it beautiful, I do not know how, Midjourney still wins. If the task is change the background on this photo or build a poster with this headline, the free options are already better.

So what should you actually do

By situation. Just curious and unwilling to spend: use the free models, starting with Nano Banana Pro. Need a handful of images for one specific project: an aggregator paid in rubles works out cheaper, since you pay per image and skip the card setup. Generating regularly and in volume: your own Standard subscription plus a foreign card, which is the lowest cost per image. Want a program to download and run offline: that option does not exist at any price.
