Sora Is Shut Down: What Happened to OpenAI’s Video Model and What Replaces It

Sora is the video model from OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT. The second version came out in autumn 2025 and instantly became the loudest name in video generation: "sora 2", "download sora" and "sora official site" still add up to over a hundred thousand searches a month. The problem is that there is nothing left to find. In spring 2026 OpenAI shut Sora down, and everything offered under that name today is either outdated or has nothing to do with OpenAI.

What happened and when

• 24 March 2026: OpenAI announced the shutdown and notified developers working through the API.
• 26 April 2026: sora.com and the Sora iOS app went offline. From that day you cannot sign in, generate, or download old clips.
• 24 September 2026: the Sora 2 API stops. Until then the model is still reachable for services that connected through the API; after that it disappears from them too.

So at the time of writing Sora lives only inside a few aggregators, and they have three weeks left. If you have unfinished Sora projects there, finish them now or move them to another model.

Why OpenAI shut Sora down

According to TechCrunch and other outlets, the reason is economics. Video generation cost OpenAI roughly a million dollars a day, while the service earned about two million in total over its lifetime. The app’s audience fell fast after a loud launch, and copyright and deepfake complaints kept piling up. The Disney deal announced in December 2025 collapsed along with the shutdown. Sora turned out to be an expensive showcase, and ahead of its IPO the company chose the profitable directions.

For the market it is an important signal: the loudest model is not necessarily the most durable. Building a process around one service, even from OpenAI, is risky. We said as much in our video model comparison, and the Sora shutdown confirmed it.

What happened to clips, accounts and subscriptions

OpenAI gave a month for export: from 24 March until the site went offline you could download your generations. After 26 April the Sora account data was deleted, and support cannot restore clips. If you did not export them before the shutdown, they are gone, and no intermediary will bring them back.

The ChatGPT subscription keeps working, just without Sora: Plus and Pro remain, video generation is no longer in them. There never was a separate Sora subscription, so there is nothing to refund for it.

"Download Sora 2" and "Sora free": what is behind these searches now

Sora could never be downloaded: it was a service on OpenAI servers, not a program. Now that the official app is gone even from the App Store, any site with the words "download Sora 2 free" hands out either someone else’s app with a swapped name or a malicious file. Eight and a half thousand people a month search precisely for "download", and for them it is the fastest way to get trouble instead of video.

The same goes for "Sora online free": services promising Sora access today either run a different model under a borrowed name or are still using the API that gets switched off on 24 September. Neither option is worth entering a card for.

What replaces Sora: three models in real use

Sora was valued for long coherent scenes with clear action logic and synchronous sound. By autumn 2026 three models cover those jobs, and all three are easier to reach from Russia than Sora ever was.

Seedance 2.5: long scenes and sound

ByteDance’s model. Thirty seconds natively, up to three minutes in long mode, sound in the same pass, 4K. Kling 3.0: motion physics and a free start

The best physics available today: water, fabric, hands, objects touching. Free credits are issued daily, which makes it the most convenient place to learn. The site opens from Russia with limitations, payment goes through intermediaries. Details in Kling from Russia.

MiniMax H3 (Hailuo 3.0): 2K with sound in one pass

The newest player. The model launched on 31 July 2026: one network understands text, images, video and audio and returns a 5 to 15 second clip in native 2K with synchronous stereo sound. A generation can take up to nine images, three videos and three audio clips as references for character, style, motion and voice. Two days after release MiniMax published the base weights openly, so the model is quickly appearing in third-party services and aggregators. Veo 3.1: when you need speech

Google’s model remains the best for synchronous speech and lip-sync, but from Russia it has the same regional problems Sora had: a foreign address, a foreign card or an aggregator. Veo guide.

What to use instead of Sora for a specific task

• A long scene with developing action → Seedance 2.5 in long mode.
• Realistic motion, hands, fabric, water → Kling 3.0.
• A short 2K clip with sound and an exact character reference → MiniMax H3.
• A talking person with lip-sync → Veo 3.1 or avatar services such as HeyGen.

The rule after the Sora shutdown: no model should be the only one. Assemble a video from two or three models for different scenes, and losing any of them costs you a day, not a project.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sora shut down for good?

Yes. The site and app went offline on 26 April 2026, the API switches off on 24 September 2026. OpenAI talks about a future video model but has officially named neither it nor a date. Postponing projects to wait for it makes no sense.

Can Sora 2 be downloaded?

No, and it never could be. Sora ran only on OpenAI servers. Anything offered as a "download" is not Sora.

Can clips made in Sora be recovered?

Only if you exported them before 26 April 2026. After that date the data was deleted and support does not restore it.

What is available from Russia instead of Sora?
