Runway from Russia: access, payment, free plan and what to use instead

First, let’s clear up the confusion: this is about Runway ML, the American AI video generation service. Not treadmills, not fuel additives, not the fashion TV show. Does Runway open from Russia

The runway.com site itself usually opens from Russian addresses, and signing up with an email or a Google account goes through. So the barrier is not at the door. It is at the checkout: the payment gateway does not accept cards issued in Russia. That is why the typical story goes like this - someone creates an account, burns the starter credits, and then hits a wall at payment.

One more thing worth knowing up front: the service pays attention to the user’s region, and a Russian region combined with repeated payment attempts looks suspicious to it. Nobody guarantees the account will live forever. If Runway is a working tool for you rather than an experiment, it makes sense from day one to register with an email you will not lose access to, and not to keep the only copy of your projects inside it.

The practical takeaway: you can almost certainly get in and try it. You cannot build a video production routine on it without a foreign card or an intermediary.

The free plan: 125 credits and that’s it

Runway does have a free plan, but it works differently from most competitors. A new account gets 125 credits once. They do not refresh daily or monthly: spend them, and the free plan is over for you. This is not a month-long trial, it is literally a handful of button presses.

How many seconds of video that buys depends on the model. The top Gen-4.5 costs 12 credits per second of finished footage, so 125 credits is roughly ten seconds. Faster, cheaper modes like Gen-4 Turbo burn about half that, which gets you around twenty five seconds from the same pool. Two or three five-second attempts, and you are done.

What else the free plan includes, and what matters before your first generation:

• Watermark. It is there on the free plan and only comes off with a subscription. The free tier is simply unusable for client work.
• Resolution. Export is capped, and the higher formats plus 4K upscaling start on the paid plans.
• Trimmed model list. A free account gets a selection of generative models, not the full catalogue.
• 5 GB of storage. Fine for experiments, not for a project archive.
• Credits are charged for every attempt. A failed generation costs exactly what a good one costs. With 125 credits total, that stings.

Runway’s free plan is not «work for free», it is «see what it looks like». Plan those 125 credits in advance: write the prompt out beforehand instead of discovering the wording by trial and error.

What the paid plans cost

There are three paid tiers plus an enterprise one. Prices are per user per month, and paying annually is noticeably cheaper than paying month to month.

• Standard - 12 dollars a month billed annually, around 15 billed monthly. 625 credits a month. Removes the watermark, unlocks the whole model catalogue and 4K upscaling.
• Pro - 28 dollars billed annually, around 35 monthly. 2,250 credits, 500 GB of storage, custom voices for lip sync and text to speech.
• Max - 76 dollars billed annually, around 95 monthly. 9,500 credits, one month of credit rollover, early access to new models, studio-grade formats and HDR generations.
• Enterprise - custom pricing: single sign-on, analytics, workspace configuration, priority support.

To translate that into something tangible: 625 credits on Standard is roughly 52 seconds of finished video on the top Gen-4.5 model, or about 104 seconds on the faster Gen-4 Turbo. Less than two minutes of material a month for 12 dollars. And those are seconds of successful generations - rejects eat credits just like keepers do, and in generative video there are always more rejects than you would like.

Hence a simple rule of thumb: if you make one or two videos a month, Standard will run out on your first working evening. The realistic minimum for regular practice is Pro. Runway used to have an unlimited plan; for new buyers it has been replaced by Max with a fixed 9,500 credits.

Do Russian cards work

No. Payments run through a foreign gateway, and cards with a Russian BIN are declined automatically regardless of the payment network. Mir is even further out of the question: outside a handful of countries it simply does not work. The error message is usually vague, something like «payment declined», and it looks like a service glitch when it is actually a filter doing its job.

There are three working ways around it, each with its own price:

1. A foreign card, either your own or issued in another country. You pay exactly Runway’s price with no markup, but you have to maintain the card and keep money on it.
2. A virtual card with a foreign BIN from an issuing service. Faster to set up, but it charges fees for issuing and topping up, and some of these cards get rejected by the gateway too.
3. An intermediary or a Russian AI aggregator that either pays on your behalf or gives you access to the models for roubles. More expensive per generation, but no card and no risk to your account.

What is behind the «download Runway» search

Nothing. Runway is a cloud service: all generation happens on the company’s servers, and there is no desktop application. There is nothing to download, and any site offering «Runway for Windows» or an installer has no connection to the service. That is a classic bait for installing unrelated software.

The one thing you genuinely can install is the official iPhone app. It is in the App Store, needs a recent iOS version, and works with the same models and the same account. Tablets are not supported, and for serious work the app still loses to the browser. Note that the app may be missing from the Russian App Store region, so installing it needs an account from another region. So «download» runs into exactly the same wall as payment does.

What to use instead if you don’t want the hassle

Runway is strong at stylised cinematic motion and at bringing a still image to life, but it has not been the only option for a while. From Russia, life is easier with models whose free tier refills instead of being a one-off.
