AI Tools in Russian: UI Language vs Prompt Language vs Cyrillic in the Frame

If you make visuals for a Russian-speaking market, sooner or later you ask whether a given tool "works in Russian". That question hides three completely different problems, and mixing them up is why people end up with the wrong tool.

One person wants menus and buttons in their own language. Another wants to type the prompt in Russian instead of translating it first. A third needs the shop sign in the shot to actually read «Кофейня» rather than a row of letter-shaped scribbles. Different problems, different answers.

Three things people call by one name

1. The interface language

Menus, buttons, tooltips, docs. This only affects how fast you find your way around. It has zero effect on output quality. A ten-button English UI takes an evening to learn, and translating those buttons would not change a single pixel of the result.

2. How well the model parses a Russian prompt

This one matters. Most large models understand some Russian, but unevenly. A plain scene like "a man in a leather jacket walks down a night street" lands fine anywhere. Craft vocabulary is where it breaks: lens choice, quality of light, camera movement. Those concepts are densely represented in English training captions and thinly in Russian ones.

The practical move is a hybrid prompt. Describe subject and mood in whatever language you think in, then write the technical half in English. That beats a fully Russian prompt on every foreign model.

3. Cyrillic text inside the image or video

This is a separate problem entirely, and it does not follow from the first two. The service can be fully Russian, your prompt can be Russian, and the poster headline still comes out mangled. More on why below.

Tools that genuinely have a Russian interface

A real Russian UI mostly means a Russian product. There are not many, but they work and they need no VPN inside Russia.

  • Shedevrum by Yandex (shedevrum.ai), running on the YandexART model. Web plus iOS and Android apps, fully Russian UI, free tier. The paid Shedevrum Pro plan ships inside the Yandex Plus subscription and adds prompts up to 1500 characters, six variants per generation and 4K upscaling.
  • Alice AI (alice.yandex.ru). Image generation lives inside the chat: a "draw a picture" button or just the word "draw". You can ask for four variants at once, set the aspect ratio and edit an uploaded photo. History syncs between phone and desktop. Free, no VPN needed.
  • GigaChat by Sber. Russian UI with image generation powered by the built-in Kandinsky model. One notable limit: images come out square only, 1024 by 1024. Reachable through the web app, the Sberbank Online app, a VKontakte bot and the Salute app.
  • Kandinsky on its own. Beyond GigaChat you can reach the model through the Fusion Brain site and an open API. Free, with request limits and peak-hour queues.
  • Russian aggregators. They resell access to foreign models behind a Russian UI and take domestic cards. More on that class of service in our AI aggregator overview.

Tools that do not

Every frontier model runs in English. That is not a blocker, it just means you configure things once yourself.

  • Midjourney. No localized version, the workflow lives in Discord. Russian prompts are parsed partially and the results are noticeably less predictable than in English. Payment is a separate hurdle: Russian cards fail in Stripe and PayPal, so you need a workaround (paying from Russia).
  • Kling. English menus, no localized build. It does read Russian prompts and will generate from them, but English phrasing is more stable. Access and limits are covered in our Kling from Russia guide.
  • Hailuo (MiniMax). English interface. We found no confirmation of a Russian build, so assume English. Hands-on notes live in the MiniMax Hailuo guide.
  • Seedance by ByteDance. Parses Russian prompts without a separate translation step, but reads cinematography terms more precisely in English. There is no direct access from Russia through either the consumer site or the official API, so people go through intermediaries.

Cyrillic in the frame: why it breaks and what to do

Why Cyrillic is harder for these models

It is a data problem, not a conspiracy. Latin characters appeared in training sets tens of times more often than Cyrillic ones, and cleanly labelled examples of Russian signage were scarce. So the model does not typeset letters, it paints shapes that resemble letters.

Length is the second factor. Each glyph is placed independently and error compounds across the string. A five-letter word survives far more often than a thirty-character phrase. The rule follows directly: the shorter the caption, the better your odds.

Which models handle it best

  • Nano Banana Pro is currently the most dependable non-Russian option for Cyrillic. Text stays readable, especially on short banners, posters and covers. Quality drops on calligraphic and heavily decorative typefaces.
  • Alice AI. In May 2026 Yandex shipped an updated Alice AI ART model and stated it produces correct Russian on-image text three times more often. The same announcement gave usable tips: wrap the caption in quotation marks, set complex words in capitals, split long phrases into short ones.
  • Shedevrum. YandexART can place text into an image and handles Russian cultural context well, with no prompt translation required.

Video is a harder case. A caption in a moving shot has to stay identical across every frame, which is substantially tougher than a still, and there is no reliable way to get clean Cyrillic straight out of a video model today.

The practical answer: put the lettering in post

The honest advice is boring, and it saves hours. If the caption matters, do not ask the model for letters.

  1. Generate a clean plate. State it in the prompt: blank sign, no text, empty label.
  2. If the model keeps writing anyway, push it into the negative prompt or add "no lettering, no logos" at the end of the description.
  3. Add the caption on top in your editor or graphics app. DaVinci Resolve, After Effects, Photoshop, Figma, whatever you already use.
  4. Pick a font with a real Cyrillic set, then match perspective and lighting so the type sits on the surface instead of floating above it.
  5. Only let the model write where a mistake does not matter: soft background, far plane, decorative signage out of focus.
The model owns the picture, the edit owns the letters. Stop asking one tool to do both and the Cyrillic problem simply goes away.

Picking by task

  • Fast, in Russian, no cards or VPN - Shedevrum, Alice AI, GigaChat. Zero setup cost.
  • A poster or cover with a Russian headline - Nano Banana Pro or Alice AI, short caption, in quotation marks.
  • Maximum image or video quality - a frontier model with an English prompt, reached through an aggregator or intermediary.
  • A video with Russian titles - any video model for the footage, titles in the edit. Never the other way round.

Frequently asked questions

Do English prompts really produce better images?

On foreign models, yes, particularly for the technical half of the description. Subject and mood travel fine in Russian; light, optics and camera movement are safer in English. Russian models such as YandexART and Kandinsky need no translation at all, they were built for the language.

Is there a Russian version of Midjourney?

No official one. The workflow runs in Discord in English. Russian prompts are partially understood but less stable. Anything marketed as "Midjourney in Russian" is a third-party aggregator that translates your request and forwards it to the same model.

Which free tools work in Russian without a VPN?

Shedevrum, Alice AI and GigaChat all offer free generation with a Russian interface and no VPN. Kandinsky is free through Fusion Brain, with request limits and queues at peak hours.

Why does the model output gibberish instead of Russian letters?

Because it is not typesetting text, it is drawing letter-like shapes. Cyrillic was heavily underrepresented next to Latin in training data, so the shapes come out approximate, and error accumulates the longer the phrase gets.

Can I ask the model to fix a broken caption?

Sometimes. Cut the caption to a single word, wrap it in quotation marks, set it in capitals and reroll a few times. It is still a lottery. When the text has to be exact - a brand name, a price, contact details - pull it out of the frame and add it in post.

Does a Russian interface affect output quality?

No. UI language and prompt language are unrelated. An aggregator with a Russian front end calls exactly the same model as the original site, and translating buttons changes nothing about the picture.

What about Cyrillic in AI video specifically?

Treat it as unavailable. Keeping a caption stable across every frame is much harder than rendering it once in a still, so plan on generating clean footage and adding titles during the edit.
