"Download ChatGPT" is really three searches wearing one query. Some people want the genuine app on their phone or laptop. Some are hoping for a free, cracked or fully offline version that was never going to exist, because ChatGPT is not that kind of product. And a meaningful share end up tapping install on something that only looks like ChatGPT: independent investigations have repeatedly found more than 50 malicious apps in the App Store and Google Play using its name and logo. Most guides answer the first question and skip the third entirely. This one covers all three, current as of September 2026.

The official app is real, and it costs nothing to install

Official ChatGPT apps exist for iPhone and Android, both published directly by OpenAI, and both free to install. The app itself is not a separate product with its own pricing: whatever plan is active, Free, Go, Plus or either Pro tier, works the same way inside the app as it does on the website, because it is the same account and the same subscription.

There is no cracked copy or offline version to find, and there never will be

ChatGPT is a cloud service. It runs on OpenAI's servers and only works with an internet connection, which means the official apps are simply clients talking to the same backend as the browser, not a standalone product with a different price or different limits hiding somewhere. A free pirated version, or a fully offline one that runs without OpenAI's servers, is not a thing anyone is holding back. It does not exist, and it cannot exist as a technical matter, the same way a browser cannot browse without the internet. Anything calling itself that is not ChatGPT.

This is the part most download guides skip, and it is the part actually worth your attention. App Store and Google Play have repeatedly turned up dozens of malicious apps riding on ChatGPT's name and logo, more than 50 of them in one investigation alone, according to multiple independent reviews of the two stores. This is not a one-time cleanup that already happened. It is a recurring pattern, because a famous name with no trademark logo lock in a store listing is an easy thing to copy.

Two kinds of fake app show up under that name, and they cause different kinds of damage.

• Fleeceware. An app that looks and behaves like a basic ChatGPT wrapper, then charges an expensive auto-renewing subscription for functionality that is either free elsewhere or barely works at all. The damage here is financial and ongoing, not a one-time charge.
• Straight malware. An app that steals saved passwords, browser data, or access to crypto wallets once installed, using the ChatGPT name purely as bait to get past the first tap.

The fraud is not limited to the app stores either. Fake websites mimicking the chatgpt.com/download page have been documented separately, set up to infect Windows and Mac machines with malware the moment someone tries to download what they believe is the official installer from a search result or an ad.

None of this requires a careless click on an obviously sketchy link. The whole design of a fleeceware or malware app copying ChatGPT's name is to look like the ordinary, boring, correct choice in a list of search results or app-store listings. That is exactly why the developer name on the listing matters more than how polished the icon looks.

How to tell the real app from an impostor before you tap install

A handful of checks catch nearly all of it, and they take less time than reading a single review.

• The developer listed on the app page should read OpenAI, not an individual's name, a studio name that sounds vaguely related, or anything else. This is the single most reliable signal.
• Support contact tied to a random Gmail address instead of an official OpenAI support channel is a red flag on its own, regardless of how the app looks.
• The genuine app is free to install as such. A listing demanding payment just to open it, before any subscription screen, is already behaving differently from the real thing.
• When in doubt, go through the official page, chatgpt.com/download, rather than searching the app's name directly inside the store and picking whatever comes up first.

If a fake app already made it onto your phone

Deleting the app is not the same as cancelling what it charged. Fleeceware subscriptions keep billing after the app itself is removed, because the subscription lives in the App Store or Google Play account settings, not inside the app. Cancelling it means going into the store's own subscription management screen and stopping it there directly. If any password was typed into the fake app at any point, changing it as soon as possible is worth doing without waiting to see whether anything looks wrong first.

Why the app might be missing from your store, and why that is not the same as ChatGPT being unavailable
